The 7th grade ELA classes at JMA are participating in the "40 Book Challenge" for the 2016-2017 school year. Scholars are encouraged to read up to 40 books, from a variety of different genres. Scholars will submit at least 2 book reviews each month, by the end of the month, based on their readings.
The first set of book reviews are due by September 30th.

Genre Requirement:
- Poetry - 2 books
- Realistic Fiction - 5 books
- Historical Fiction - 3 books
- Fantasy/Mythology - 2 books
- Science Fiction/Dystopian - 2 books
- Mystery - 3 books
- Traditional literature (Fairy Tales, Fables, Folktale, Tall Tales) - 3 books
- Informational (non-fiction) - 5 books
- Biography/Autobiography - 3 books
- Graphic Novel - 2 books
- International/Multicultural - 3 books
- Chapter books (your choice) - 7 books
★Each book must be read by the student.
★Students may not read books that they have already read in the past.
★Elementary level and picture books will not count toward student goal (bring any questionable book to Mrs. Ward for approval).
★Books that are over 250 pages or books that Ms. Ward classifies as ‘challenging classics’ count as two books.
★Books read in class or are read aloud by a teacher count in the 40 book total.
★Students are allowed to ‘abandon’ a book that is not holding their interest, but it does not count toward their total.
★Students may listen to audio versions of a book and follow along in the printed book for up to 10 books.
★Student must meet the genre requirements by the end of the school year. Students may choose what book and when it’s read for each genre requirement.
★Students are responsible for tracking the books they read in their Interactive Notebooks.
★Students may not read books that they have already read in the past.
